House Background

Before the Lupan Homeworld was discovered, the Lupan were a pre-spaceflight species, divided into many houses. House Arrecinus was a growing house focused on agriculture and a standing military. A few years before the planet was discovered, House Arrecinus enacted a military coup with its allies, becoming the major power there. Having taken control of the planet, their allies joined officially, with the new government furthering their advances in spaceflight technology, seeing it as the last remaining frontier to be discovered. When the planet was discovered, house Arrecinus had already begun to take the steps into space. Despite their military coup, House Arrecinus wished cooperation with the newcomers and opened its borders to them, resulting in Lupan technology advancing by leaps and bounds for a while.

Under the guidance of Lucilius Arrecinus, the Master at the time, their Navy grew exponentially as new trade routes opened up with the rest of the galaxy. Despite amassing a navy and military, they did not have ambitions of conquering, rather defense and a show of their proud military tradition. With Lucilius' passing, control of the House passed to Vincentius, who immediately scrapped their agriculture and focused on their military. Righ, Vincentius' brother-in-law, subsequently granted the company to House Arrecinus as part of marrying into the family, though Vincentius let him continue to run it in their name. With the discovery of psionic bloodlines within the Lupan race, Vincentius formed the Collegium Augurium to research, develop and hire out psionic Lupan bodyguards. Currently, the House is expanding over the known galaxy while attempting to cement its hold on its homeworld.

Spheres of Activity

Feriae Leisure (Leisure)

Feriae Leisure is a company who specializes in entertainment and relaxation in Lupan space, operating under the banner of House Arrecinus. Under the watchful management of its leader, Righ Arrecinus, it has expanded outside of Lupan space as well, opening establishments across the known galaxy. Notably, Feriae operates a standard design for its facilities, often expanding them as required by the local population afterwards. Because of this, visitors can generally know what to expect when visiting their facilities.

Taberna

The taberna, or tavern to the non-Lupan races, is a common house open to all, serving drinks and in some cases meals to patrons. While there are no rules against it, many of the higher-class Lupan avoid the taberna due to its popularity with the lower classes. However, some taberna do cater exclusively to such classes.

Thermae

Thermae have cultural significance amongst the Lupan population, but are also popular with the other races. These public baths and spas cater to the physical well-being and cleanliness of its clients. Each thermae is build with a hot bath (caldarium), warm bath (tepidarium) and cold bath (frigidarium) at the very least. Most facilities have gender-specific baths, though some in Lupan-centric worlds do not. Despite the social influences of other races and cultures, visitors are expected to disrobe when visiting the facilities. Other facilities would include mudbaths, massage parlors, saunas and open-air atriums for exercise.

Ludi

The ludi, or games halls, are host to all manner of games, be it games of chance or skill. Strategic board games are surprisingly popular amongst the Lupan visitors, though betting dice are also common distractions. The larger ludi also sports facilities for physical competitions such as wrestling, riding, throwing and swimming, with those closer to Lupan-dominated worlds also sporting facilities for battling. These fights are never to the death, however, and Lupan medical technology makes such things impossible outside of active sabotage.

Collegium Augurium (Psionics)

The collegium augurium is part political arm and part educational center. Primarily, it takes in those with proven psionic abilities or from a psionic bloodline and furthers both the education of those with psionic abilities and research into the abilities themselves. Furthermore, it actively tracks families with proven psionic lines and does its utmost to arrange marriages to ensure a growing, and more powerful, psionic line. The collegium augurium also handles the administration and transportation of its psionic individuals to Houses who have made arrangements with House Arrecinus. Such individuals can serve as aides and advisors outside of their usual bodyguard role, given their training.

Lupan psionics, also called augurs, are classed in three groups. The augur tiro are the younger of the two who have yet to fully harness their psionic potential. Their schedules are just as strict as those in the Lupan Military, spending most of their day training or in lectures. It is believed that being more knowledgeable strengthens the mind and thus psionic potential, though no studies have proven a conclusive link as of yet. The augur tiro are easily identified by their dress code. All augur tiro wear short-sleeved white tunica and, optionally, matching braccae.

The augurs are those who have passed their training to an acceptable standard, and as such, are available to perform duties for the other Houses. Augurs must successfully pass rigorous trials as well as be of adult age (18 in Lupan culture) before they can be considered for duties. Unlike the augur tiro, their schedules are far more relaxed, though they are expected to practice their psionic abilities where possible. Augurs are also easily identified by their own unique dress code. Their tunica is deep red, long-sleeved and longer than most, reaching to their knees. Under this, they will wear dark braccae (optional in Lupan-dominated worlds) and a half-wrapped lower robe. Most notably, they also wear a blindfold of white cloth. While this would seem to disadvantage them, augurs instead see with their psionics rather than their eyes. Experienced augurs may also wear a sash colored black with a brooch shaped similarly to House Arrecinus' emblem, as well as a hood. All augurs, however, carry their gladius with them at all times, which a rare few augurs are known to telekinetically 'throw' at attackers.

The augur ecclesiarchy are the teachers, researchers and administrators stationed at the collegium. While not all are psionic themselves, it is advantageous to have psionic experience when teaching. Unlike the augurs, they are not hired out to the other Houses. Instead, they are kept on-site to fulfill teaching duties. Like the other augurs, the ecclesiarchy have a noticeable dress code. They wear long-sleeved white tunics, though decorated with red and gold designs. Those with psionic abilities wear a sash which bears a similar design, accompanied by the same brooch the augurs wear. As they aren't hired out to the other Houses, they do not carry a weapon with them unless they are teaching augur tiro in the use of said weapons.

Scholla Belli (Military)

The scholla belli, or school of war, refers to facilities set up on various planets that serve as barracks and training facilities for those seeking to enter a career in military, or simply improve their fighting or command skills. Generally, all recruits of the Lupan military attend the scholla belli, where they will be subjected to basic military training. Those few who stand out from their unit are added into the command training programs and have their aptitudes noted on their personnel files. Privately-funded applicants are grouped separate from military trainees, but undergo similar training regiments. Each unit, regardless of race, is treated as if it is a Lupan military legion and expected to perform as well as one. Lupan dress codes are also enforced, though special considerations may be given with good reason. Notably, the Lupan instructors favor direct physical training rather than VR simulations, and no scholla belli facility contains such facilities.

Proelium Academia

The Proelium Academia is the most prestigious of the scholla belli facilities. Located on Cheleb Secundus, it was commissioned by the late Lucilius Arrecinus to serve as the barracks for his Legions. However, with his passing, Vincentius refurbished it as a training barracks for the most elite soldiers of the Lupan military. Many Lupan actively hope of being taught at the Proelium Academia due to its reputation and its staff, which are hand-chosen decorated veterans. Vincentius also frequents the school to make sure the soldiers are performing to the standards required, as he tends to hand-pick new recruits for the Cohortes Praetoriae from promising students and graduates.

Expiscor Technologies (Technology)

Expiscor Technologies is the lead research and development company for House Arrecinus and the Lupan Military. In the wake of Fomalhaut Australis' discovery, Expiscor was buried under breakthroughs by many other research groups and never fully recovered until its purchase by House Arrecinus. It underwent a renovation and restructuring, and has since become the top Lupan research organization. While it does have a leaning towards weapons and spaceflight development, it does research in all areas and generally breaks its research down into teams, who each focus in a single area to maximize development potential. These teams are flexible with its members, allowing them to transfer to another team should they have an idea on technology their team isn't working on. Furthermore, they are the most open Lupan organization, hiring scientists and technicians regardless of race. For security reasons, however, background checks are required to discern political leanings.

Military

The military of House Arrecinus is split into two distinct groups, the legions and the fleets. While there is no limit to the size of a fleet, the legions are generally divided into groups of one hundred soldiers, though both fleets and legions are led by a centurion and his officers. A centurion is aided in his duties by the optio who works directly below him. Each fleet and legion also has a vexillarius who bears that legion or fleet's standard, keeps records of their deeds and handles the pay. That standard, or vexillum, is seen as a vital object to the lupan soldiers, and losing it is a great shame upon their families. Many lupan go on suicide missions in order to recover their standard and to clear the mark on their family's name. The vexillum itself is also tipped with the aquila. Furthermore, the legions only accept those formally aligned with House Arrecinus. Those of other races are instead placed into auxiliary legions, though other than the designation, there is no functional difference between the two.

Weaponry

Gladius

While the Gladius may look to be dated by most modern military standards, it has proven to be a favorite weapon of lupan soldiers. Equipped with a high-frequency module, the blade of the weapon is reinforced with a powerful alternating current, strengthening it and allowing it to withstand resonating at extremely high frequency. This vibration allows the blade to weaken the molecular bonds of its target, giving vastly improved cutting power. However, the HF module only amplifies the strength of the weapon, rather than improving it. An HF module equipped on a poorly made blade will see little improvement over a masterwork sword. The HF modules are powered by a battery within the pommel of the sword.

Pugio Pistol

The standard sidearm of the lupan military, the Pugio is a lightweight, yet deadly weapon. While it does use kinetically launched slugs much like primitive firearms, lupan weaponry uses electromagnetic railgun technology to propel the bullets at speeds of up to 2000 - 3500 m/s, with powerful dampeners to eliminate the issue of recoil making it impossible to aim or fire without shattering the user's bones. Each clip for the Pugio holds 17 rounds in total, so its use is somewhat limited. Despite this, it is still a favorite to have in close-combat situations.

Hasta Rifle

Much like the Pugio pistol, the Hasta utilizes the same railgun technology, however augments it with a larger clip size and a choice of firing modes. It allows for single shots, 3-round bursts or fully automatic fire. It also comes equipped with a high-frequency bayonet, though the lupan favor the Gladius as a close-combat weapon. Each clip for the Hasta carries a grand total of 30 shots, primarily to discourage spray-and-pray fire and instill a trigger discipline in the troops using it. The Hasta does utilize a second clip inserted behind the first when in fully automatic mode whenever the primary clip is exhausted, however if the user attempts to fire when the primary clip is empty, the gun will instead switch to this clip.

Pilum Sniper Rifle

The Pilum rifle uses a more powerful electromagnetic coil than the Hasta or the Pugio, as well as using specially-treated bullets to give it high armor-piercing potential. This allows it to serve the role of an anti-materiel rifle, though the majority of the lupan military refer to it as a sniper rifle. Because of this increase in power, the Pilum has a very slow firing rate and excessive firing in quick succession has been known to melt the barrel of the gun. Despite this, its effectiveness has been proven in properly disciplined snipers. Each clip only carries three rounds, though the user is encouraged to fire and relocate constantly to avoid potential returning fire.

Ballista HMG

The Ballista heavy machinegun uses an improved railgun tech at the expense of being quite large and cumbersome. Because of this, soldiers who utilize the Ballista are generally assigned a second soldier to provide quick reloads and help brace the weapon when firing. The Ballista is belt-fed its ammunition, which can vary in the number of bullets it holds, though the number is generally in the hundreds. It is a devastating anti-infantry weapon, though can also deal significant damage to lightly-armored vehicles. However, it can be slow to set up or redeploy at a moment's notice without assistance.

Catalpulta Missile Launcher

The Catapulta is the primary anti-vehicle weapon of the lupan military. This missile launcher can load a variety of payloads to deal with most threats. The Catapulta can be folded down for easier carrying, although the ammunition is bulky and in some cases heavy, limiting its use somewhat. Most payloads feature the addition of a targeting system, allowing it to lock on and track targets via IFF or heat tracking. The weapon also allows the user to deliberately dumb-fire its payloads.

When designing the Cacus superheavy tank, lupan engineers originally designed it with a cannon far too powerful for proper use. The recoil from the demolisher cannon would knock the shell wildly off-target, making it useless as a weapon. The project would have been scrapped if not for the addition of a mounting brace at the front of the tank to help keep it steady, though disabling the turret's movement. This also added the problem of faster vehicles with anti-armor weapons being able to outmaneuver it and strike critical weak points, though this too was solved by the addition of light AP autoguns on the sides. While not indestructible, the Cacus superheavy tank is a highly formidable foe on the battlefield when operated by a competent crew.

Faced with long deployments from space, the Virtus dropship was developed to hasten deployments from space to a planet as well as planetary deployment. The Virtus can also serve as a gunship if needed to help secure a landing zone, but its main role is to land, deposit a legion and move on. All weaponry on this ship is controlled from within the cockpit of the aircraft, situated above the troop bay itself. Though capable of travel in a vacuum, it only has enough oxygen for thirty minutes of atmosphere-less deployment, meaning the carriers that transport it do need to be close to the target planet's atmosphere.

When faced with the problem of planetary vehicle deployments taking too long with the GD-1300, lupan engineers examined the blueprints on hand to come up with a viable solution to this problem. It was at this point that it was suggested that they alter the schematics of the Virtus dropship, resulting in the armor pattern variant. It swapped the troop deployment bay, demolisher cannon and AP autoguns for a larger fuel tank, extra engines and hull-mounted clamps to hold vehicles. With this set-up, it can quickly deploy most vehicles to the front-lines on a planet, as well as handle the movement of armored vehicles around a planet's surface. Much like the original, the armor variant lacks long-term space travel capabilities. Furthermore, the vehicles must be unmanned during transport, as it was decided that retrofitting vehicles with ports for air supply during transport would present weak points when the vehicles hit the ground. Instead, a skeleton crew for the transported vehicles rides with the pilots and deploys through the side hatches, prepping the vehicle for their legion's use upon touchdown.

Defending a sector in three dimensions is a pretty tricky business, especially when even at FTL speeds, transit of a defense fleet can take some time. For that reason, the Dolus class minelayer was developed. The Dolus trades all weaponry for a large bay capable of deploying many high-explosive mines that, when deployed, engage their ECM suites to disguise themselves from electronic sensor arrays. While still visual, their tiny size makes them difficult to spot in space. Furthermore, an IFF system prevents them from detonating against friendly vessels. Dolus ships are rarely sent to the front lines of a naval battle and are instead used to deny progression through an area. Those that are sent into heated battle generally throw their payload into a busy engagement and hope that stray enemy ships enter the resulting field.

During heated fleet engagements, many Centurions found that their ships were prioritizing targets individually rather than acting as a whole cohesive unit. Sharing of targeting data was hampered by comm traffic and response times, effectively weakening the entire fleet. To counter this, the CMD-4 Fides class corvette was commissioned and quickly entered service. Sacrificing weapons, it was equipped with powerful sensors and transmitters, allowing it to gather targeting data for the fleet's weapons and transmit it to the fleet through its own power.

These ships would be crewed by skilled data analysts and technicians, though the optio of the fleet would also be present on this vessel, helping to coordinate other efforts with the fleet, such as troop deployment, repairs or scouting. All sensor data would be passed to this vessel, and then disseminated to the whole fleet. However, its lack of weapons and importance to the fleet does make it a popular target. While the fleet can still operate effectively without this vessel, its presence can make a good fleet into a deadly one.

Transporting legions to a planet's surface with GD-1300 freighters proved to be a time-consuming, and often costly, affair. In response, the Corvus frigate was rolled out. Taking ideas from the Advector carrier, the ship was scaled down and outfitted to hold its own crew and an entire legion. The ship would enter geostationary orbit above the target location and open its lower bay doors. At that point, drop pods containing the legion would be fired down at the location and the drop pod's guidance system would guide it through the planet's atmosphere with an error ratio of about a mile, though unexpected weather interference or sudden loss of stabilizers of the ship can vastly interfere with this projection.

The drop pods themselves are damaged by the descent through a planet's atmosphere, but can be recovered and repaired for re-use to save on costs. Those too damaged to be repaired are instead broken down for salvageable materials. Later, the drop pods were altered to allow deployment to hostile ships as well as planets by adding clamps that would latch on to a ship's hull and bore through the ship's hull. This tactic is only ever used against ships whose engines have been disabled to prevent the loss of valuable soldiers. The pods are also too small to allow transport of vehicles, which would instead be carried by the Advector carrier and delivered by freighter transports to a secure foothold on a planet.

Currently, only one of these vessels exists, the Martius Lupus. Commissioned by Vincentius Arrecinus himself for his late father, the ship wasn't completed by Lucilius' death. Rather than scrap the project, Vincentius extended the time for Navis Shipyards to complete the contract. The increased development time was spent in adding new functionalities to the vessel, allowing it to serve as both a potent warship and diplomatic vessel. While not invulnerable, it is a very capable vessel, further bolstered by its ability to carry squads of fighters into battle and either a few squads of corvettes or a single capital ship.

The Martius Lupus is equipped with ample living quarters for up to twenty VIPs, with excess bunks for entourage. It also boasts a large ballroom for use in diplomatic gatherings or celebrations, should the need arise. The Master of the House also has contact with all of his House's members and retainers from his personal office aboard the ship should the need arise (though subject to extranet lag). A war room can also used by either the fleet's admiral or Master of the House to coordinate the fleets for whatever may be required.

Originally an experiment into energy efficiency, the Eversor Destroyer uses linear gravity emulation, rather than planar, resulting in a distinct V-shaped hull with its floors at an angle to each other. This resulted in less power draw, meaning a smaller reactor could be fitted. While its armaments may be less than other ships in the class, it is cheaper to produce and more agile, making it a mainstay of most fleets.

The Mechanicus is classed as a capital ship despite its lack of armaments and due to its role. Engagements may last for a long time and it was decreed that the navies of House Arrecinus come up with a solution to avert battles failing due to lack of ammunition or simply due to arriving in a damaged state due to spacial debris. The navies responded by drawing up a draft of the Mechanicus mobile shipyard. The prototype version of the Mechanicus proved its usefulness in constructing and maintaining squads of fighters and corvettes, and as such, extra funding was granted to expand the functionality all the way up to capital-class ships.

Due to the astronomical cost of fielding and maintaining the Mechanicus, only two are currently in deployment as part of a dedicated construction fleet and its escorts and support craft who haul resources to these ships. The Mechanicus ships have four docking ports on its hull; A service dock on the lower levels for material unloading, a small hangar port for fighters and corvettes on the port side, a larger docking port with dry-dock for construction of frigates on the starboard side and a large upper wet-dock that handles construction of capital ships.

Miscellaneous

Temo Aeronautics GD-1300 Freighter

The GD-1300 Freighter was designed by Temo Aeronautics as a multi-purpose transport, able to haul cargo, raw materials or even passengers easily. This made it the preferred vessel to be used when the Mechanicus shipyards required resources to continue operations. The GD-1300 was also used to transport legions down to the surface of a planet for military exercises. While the design is licensed to the lupan military, civilian variants of this ship do exist and are popular with the lupan in particular, perhaps due to the military's reliance on them meaning nearly every lupan pilot is familiar with its operation. The civilian variants, however, lack the modularity of its military counterpart, instead being sold as a variety of fixed models.

After production of the Mechanicus class shipyards, it was discovered that the GD-1300 was unable to haul the larger components of ships within a decent amount of time. The lupan military reached out to a variety of private shipyards to help design a solution to this problem. Stella Dynamics stepped up and presented the schematics for the Carruca. Unlike the GD-1300, it carries its larger components externally, while still keeping enough space for internal components to be stored. This also allowed the ship to serve as a tug, hauling derelicts and wreckage back to shipyards or starbases. Four or five Carruca vessels could effectively tug an abandoned capital ship to port, as well as deploy skeleton crews to assist in either bringing it back online or dismantling it for parts.
