(16/6/17) - 33nd of Resolve, 4th Year of Emperor Alexander Drakkon, 86AR

During the fourth year of Emperor Alexander Drakkon's reign, the Empire was split in two. The Emperor announced the dissolution of the Council of Houses and all trappings of the Empire refounded under Aldwin Vermine following dissatisfaction with its progress on recent proposals and reformed the Empire into the Imperium of Draco. House Black subsequently announced that all planet's north and inclusive of the Alphecca - Alpheratz line would be placed under his rule. These events happened peacefully and abruptly.

The galaxy of Draco is once more divided between two states. The Imperium of Draco, and the Remnant Realm in the north.

For a more detailed version of events, please see the timeline. For more opinions and experiences of specific reigns, especially from Emperors, please see the chronicles. This introduction to history in Draco outlines, in general terms, the history of the galaxy thus far.

The history of the Draco galaxy can be broken down into a series of Ages. Much of the Golden Age of Draco is lost to legend, and the few surviving records of that time are treasured. The Dark Ages which followed are even less well-documented. Widespread social, economic, and technological collapse caused the galaxy to implode in onto itself. The cause for Dark Ages is unclear, but most scholars agree that rampant technological advancement is the most likely explanation. Exactly what technological development prompted the change, however, is unclear. The post-Dark Age galaxy has come to be known as 'After Reunification', usually abbreviated to AR.

After Reunification

A New Empire

The Age of the New Empire lasts from the Reunification of the galaxy, roughly until the final years of Empress Angelline's reign (~5AR). This was a period of renewal, rebirth, and significant scheming amongst the noble Houses as they vied for power across the dozens of worlds which had been opened up for development. Major new faiths would arise and spread across the galaxy, while the noble Houses aligned themselves in a variety of different alliances.

Issues of tax and a growing unhappiness with the first two Empresses (Ru Tstem and Angelline) would result in a major political conflict that established the primacy of the Council of Houses over the Senate in the role of selecting the holder of the Imperial Throne. The end of this Age also marks the beginning of the fragmentation of the Empire, with House I Grog U Seer withdrawing two planets from the empire, Matar and Gomeisa 7. This effectively marks the beginning of the Circle of Water, a major political entity that defined imperial relations until its collapse during the Second Dimming.

The First Dimming

Scholars have argued over the exact start of the First Dimming. Certainly by the time Emperor Marcus was appointed to the throne it had well and truly begun, and scant records exist until the end of Emperor Marcus' reign. It is certain that the first major war of the reunified galaxy was fought in this period, with most speculating this to be the Nagendra-Dominion war which saw the disbandment of one of the remaining before-reunifiction governments on Mirfak and the start of the faith of the Pack's rise across Northeastern Draco.

The Imperial Age

The Imperial Age is generally agreed to have started with the ascent of Emperor Dramorian to the throne. It is the longest period of sustained activity in the history of the galaxy. It is characterized by an increasingly inconsistent Empire and Emperors which varied wildly between allowing the further fracturing of the Empire, and seeking to violently restore it to its original claim. It was a time of political instability that once more reaffirmed the right of the Council of Nobles, not the Senate, to select and announce the Emperor. In one of the most iconic moments of the age Emperor Grigori Rurik died in combat defending Tarazed from House Xanatos. His death is indicative of the Age. It is also notable for the number of independent, and semi-independent, polities across the galaxy that established themselves during this period. It is generally considered to have ended with the Cortesian Crusades which sought to bring the Circle of Water back into the embrace of the Empire.

The Enlightened Age

The Enlightened Age is an oft-disputed Age but all agree that the reign of House McKenna differed significantly to the usual reigns of the Emperor's during the Imperial Age. Under Empress McKenna the Empire expanded its borders, bringing several new planets into the Empire and allowing for significant economic growth in a comparatively peaceful political atmosphere. The few wars fought during this period arose between the Concordat and various other Houses in the region, including the Imperial House. The sudden disappearance of House McKenna from the galactic scene is agreed to have ended the Enlightened Age.

The Second Dimming

The Second Dimming is agreed to have lasted from the appointment of House D'Astier until the violent revolt against House Crow in 63AR. Records from this time are few, but it is largely understood that House D'Astier squandered the economic and political gains made by House McKenna during his reign, while House Crow ruled the now mostly reunitied galaxy with an iron fist. It is during the Second Dimming that the Stokkonem Empire under House Pavlov is founded, and a political faction led by the future Emperor Vermine would rise in the Northeast.

The Age of Law

The current age is agreed to have started with the efforts of Houses Pavlov and Cruze to overthrow House Crow. This is the only known revolution against the imperial throne in history. Although efforts to restore order after the fall of House Crow continued much was left undone, with political developments stalled in the early stages. Emperor Cruze and his family vanished in a “freak solar storm spaceship laser crash explosion” which led to the appointment of Emperor Vermine in 67AR.

The appointment of Aldwin Vermine marked a turning point in the Age where the brief spark of life in the galaxy was tempered by the rule of law and the enforcement of principles almost entirely forgotten. Excesses were ended, and the implementation of a new constitution and the primacy of the written word over the whims of the nobility stood in contrast to the heady days that led the galaxy out of its slumber.

Aldwin Vermine's reign was followed by the election of Jacca Black, one of his closest allies, as the new Emperor of Draco. Black's five years reign (78-82AR) was marked by a long period of peace and no war or rebellion, and the arrival of numerous new houses on the galactic scene.
